Bortolami looks to unlock the Portugal defence

Italian captain Marco Bortolami was pleased to have got the win over Portugal, but admitted it was a disappointing performance on Wednesday.

Having got off to a perfect start, scoring after just four minutes, Italy proceeded to fail to cross the line again until the final ten minutes of an error-ridden affair.

"It was very important to get a win but unfortunately we didn't play as well as we would have liked," Bortolami said.

"Our start was very good, but after ten minutes we lost our way and could not find the answer to breaking down the Portuguese defence."

Bortolami paid tribute to the manner in which Portugal approached the game, but pointed to his own side's lack of structure as a key.

"They were a very physical side and played with a lot of intensity and we need to play with a lot more order to our game," he said.

Italy now take a ten day break before taking on Scotland in the crucial game for both sides, and Bortolami admitted they will need vast improvements if they are to win.

"The game with Scotland is going to be very tough for us as we are not in very good shape at the moment," he said.

"Luckily we have ten days now to work hard and find our structure ready for a huge game with the aim of competing with the Scots."
