Roman Gladiator: Alessandro Troncon enjoys his last night on the world stage

Italy coach Pierre Berbizier lamented his side's lack of discipline after Scotland booted the Azzurri out of the World Cup via a tense 18-16 victory in St-Étienne on Saturday night.

Scotland star Chris Paterson nailed six penalties out of six as the Scots squeezed home in a error-strewn, rain-sodden game to reach the tournament's last eight for the sixth successive occasion.

Italy scored the only try of the game through skipper Alessandro Troncon with full-back David Bortolussi adding one conversion and three penalties.

But it was no match for Paterson's lethal boot.

"The Italians were very strong, but the Scots were better," said Berbizier.

"We had a problem with our discipline and Paterson made us pay. The Scots were in charge."

Troncon, playing his last match for his country, said that Italy had been competitive but ultimately came up short.

Bortolussi had a chance to put his country into the quarter-finals with a late penalty, but his kick fell agonisingly wide.

"I thought we could win right up to the last minute, but it was not to be," said Troncon.

"We are all very sad. Finally the end has come for me.

"There was the opportunity but we did not take advantage."
